Amid the deadly violence in Gaza, the US yesterday announced its new Message opened in Jerusalem. The move follows President Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December. This move delighted the Israelis, angered the Palestinians and triggered widespread international condemnation.
Most countries want to keep their embassies in Tel Aviv and believe that the status of Jerusalem (a city sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians) must be determined by an appropriate peace settlement. Although the embassy relocation met with international rejection, according to Al Jazeera Representatives from 33 different countries attended the opening ceremony. 86 countries with diplomatic missions in Israel had received invitations, and representatives from the countries on the following map were present at the event.
The most important European participants were conspicuous by their absence. The countries present were Albania, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Macedonia, RomaniaSerbia and Ukraine. Africa was slightly better represented in Jerusalem yesterday with diplomats from 11 countries.
Correction: An earlier version of this graphic showed that representatives from Nigeria, Thailand and Vietnam attended the event, which is incorrect. If you still do not see the updated map, please refresh your browser.
