Although the coalition led by Saudi Arabia is Air strikes on Yemen modern Western warplanes and precision-guided munitions, innocent civilians are still being caught in the crosshairs. According to the United Nations, around 10,000 people have died in the conflict so far, two thirds of them civilians. Due to the fighting and the partial blockade, 22 million people are dependent on aid and the situation could deteriorate further depending on the outcome of the attack on the coastal town of Hudaydah. Hudaydah is a vital port for humanitarian aid and a disruption to this flow could put hundreds of thousands of people at risk of starvation.
Reliable statistics on the conflict in the Yemen are notoriously hard to come by. A non-profit organisation called The Yemen Data Project has been monitoring the Saudi coalition's airstrikes, and its findings help to provide a picture of the scale of the airstrikes. Since March 2015, there have been around 17,000 airstrikes in total. The following infographic provides an overview of some of the targets attacked. While around 3,400 military facilities were hit, residential areas were attacked 1,543 times. There were 70 airstrikes on medical facilities, 266 on educational institutions and 45 on mosques.
