A high level of news literacy is important when it comes to distinguishing fact from fiction and a fake news story to recognise. This was an important aspect of the Reuters Institute Digital News Reportwhich analysed trust and disinformation in global news consumption. Unsurprisingly, the report found that people with a high interest in news tended to be more concerned about fake news. In countries with high news literacy, people were more likely to recognise satirical news, opinion mongering and examples of bad journalism. In Turkey, 49 per cent of respondents believe they have been exposed to completely fabricated news in the last week. In the United States, the figure is also high at 31 per cent, which is hardly surprising given the emergence of fake news during the 2016 election and its proliferation since then. More surprising is the low figure of 15 per cent in the UK, given how controversial disinformation was during the election. Brexit vote was.
