The latest edition of the Global Peace Index estimates that violence cost the global economy 14.8 trillion dollars in 2017 - almost 2,000 dollars per person. Unsurprisingly, the Syria devastated by war with a cost of violence of 68 per cent of GDP. Afghanistan and Iraq follow in second and third place with a cost of violence of 63 and 51 per cent of GDP respectively.
