The General Assembly of the United Nations elects 5 non-permanent members of the Security Council on Friday. In total, the UN Security Council consists of 15 members: 5 permanent members (USA, China, Russia, France, UK) and 10 non-permanent members, who are elected for a term of two years. All 5 permanent members had 73 one-year terms (for Russia divided between the former USSR and the current Russian Federation). The non-permanent member with the most years and terms of office is Japan, followed by the two South American countries Brazil and Argentina. Both Pakistan and India, which have been at loggerheads over disputed Kashmir for 70 years, have spent 14 years or 7 two-year terms on the Security Council.
