The General Assembly of the United Nations elects 5 non-permanent members of the Security Council on Friday. The UN Security Council consists of 15 members in total: 5 permanent members (USA, China, Russia, France, UK) and 10 non-permanent members, who are elected for two years.
All 5 permanent members had 73 one-year terms of office (for Russia divided into the former USSR and the current Russian Federation). The non-permanent member with the most years and terms of office is Japan, followed by the two South American countries Brazil and Argentina. Both Pakistan and India, which have been at an impasse for 70 years over the controversial Kashmir conflict, have been represented on the Security Council for 14 years or seven two-year terms.
