5 simple ways to stimulate your creativity

Writing an article is not just about putting thoughts into words and then typing and writing them. You need to capture your reader's interest and keep them reading. To get your message across, you need to grab the reader's attention, pique their interest and make them curious. The most important ingredient in writing an article is a large dose of creativity. While creativity comes naturally to many people, there are those who have writer's block or something similar that drives them crazy. Many writers have literally pulled their hair out when they've had writer's block and just couldn't get their creative juices flowing. There is an art to turning words into images in the reader's mind. Clear and sharp exposition requires a certain flair that can only be achieved through creativity. Similes and metaphors are very helpful, but the way an article is woven word by word, sentence by sentence and then paragraph by paragraph into a whole article develops the essence of the article. So what should you do if you can't think of anything? There's no surefire way to come up with the perfect ideas, but there are simple ways to get your creativity flowing. No one can guarantee you'll have the perfect mindset, but many methods can help you achieve that mindset. Here are five simple ways to do it.

1) Always keep a diary or journal with you.

Ideas can be triggered by anything you hear, see or smell. Your senses are your radar for finding great ideas. Write down all your ideas in a diary and keep it with you for reference. You can also write down everything you read or hear. You can use other people's ideas to develop your own, and that's not stealing. Remember that ideas and creativity can come from anywhere; it's the development of the idea that makes it unique.

2) Relax and take time to organise things.

A muddled mind cannot create space for new ideas. Everyone needs to have a clear head if they want to give free rein to their creativity. Remove any obstacles that could get in the way of your creativity. If something is bothering you, you can't force your mind to stay focussed. Try to relax as often as possible and reflect on your experiences and interactions with others. Your experiences shape the way you think and your opinions, which could be reflected in your writing. Try to discover yourself, find out what triggers your feelings. Find out what inspires you and what excites you. You can use these emotions to express yourself and your ideas and thus become creative.

3) Create a workplace that stimulates your creativity.

Your workplace can be quite an obstacle if you don't feel comfortable and relaxed there. Creativity happens when you are in a good state of mind. A messy workspace that distracts you is not exactly conducive to your creative flow. Surround your workspace with objects that make you feel happy and relaxed. You can hang up pictures or scents, objects that inspire you or anything that boosts your creativity. A clean and well-organised workspace also removes distractions and unwanted obstacles. With a good workspace, you can work in peace and don't even realise how time flies.

4) Create the right atmosphere.

To create the right mood, you need to get into the moment or go with what comes to mind best. When you figure out what makes you tick, you can find ways to get your creativity flowing. Set the pace for your mood and everything else will follow. There are many ways to influence your mood. Some writers have been known to use alcohol, a little sip of wine, to stimulate the imagination. Some want atmospheric music, others let the ambient lighting create the mood.

5) Go on a trip and just do something crazy.

When you let yourself go and have fun, adrenaline is released, fuelling your imagination. Go on an adventure or a celebratory hike. Whatever it is that deviates from your daily routine can take the rut out of your schedule. In no time at all, your creativity will capitalise on this experience and your imagination will be running at full speed.
