Once again, a ship rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean is in limbo at sea. The Maltese and Italian authorities are refusing to allow the ship "Lifeline" with 220 refugees on board to dock in their harbours. Both countries already closed their harbours to a ship with around 630 refugees on board a fortnight ago. The new Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini ordered that the ship "Aquarius" should not be allowed to enter Italian harbours, as the island state of Malta was responsible for this. Malta refused.
The newly elected Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez then offered the ship refuge in Spain. As our infographic based on Data from the United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR shows that the number of people arriving in Europe via the Mediterranean has fallen since its peak in 2015. Spain has overtaken Italy this year (as at the end of June) and has received the most arrivals by sea. The number of people arriving in Greece has decreased in recent years, as an agreement between the EU and Turkey is in place to stop migration via this route. The UNHCR estimates that more than 16,300 people were missing or presumed dead on the Mediterranean route alone between 2014 and June 2018.
