The latest edition of the Small Arms Survey revealed that it Worldwide more than one billion firearms of which at least 857 million (85 per cent) are in civilian hands. A further 133 million (13 per cent) are held by the military and 23 million are held by law enforcement agencies. Military-owned firearms are a leading factor in conflict and violence. More than 43 per cent of the world's total stockpile is held by just two countries - Russia and China.
The study estimates that the Russian military has just over 30.3 million assault rifles, machine guns and small arms in its arsenal, just ahead of China with 27.5 million. Also in North Korea are military firearms Highly concentrated. An estimated 8.4 million weapons are centrally controlled by the armed forces of the secretive country. In the United States, the estimated total number, divided between the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, is much lower at just 4.5 million.
