The Small Arms Survey 2018 has analysed the number of weapons in circulation in 230 countries and found that around 857 million firearms are in the hands of civilians. This figure is 32 per cent higher than an earlier estimate in 2006. 40 per cent of the global total - an estimated 393 million weapons - are in the possession of civilians. Civilians in the United States India has the second highest number of firearms in civilian ownership with just over 70 million, while China is in third place with almost 50 million.
If you break the figures down to 100 inhabitants, however, things look very different. Last year, the USA had 120.5 firearms per 100 inhabitants, well ahead of second-placed Yemen (52.8). Serbia and Montenegro are in joint third place with 39.1 each. The situation is completely different in Japan and Indonesia. In both countries, there is less than one weapon per 100 inhabitants.
