The Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday in the case of Janus vs. AFSCME decided that public sector workers could opt out of paying union dues. Trade unions enjoyed widespread membership and support in the mid-twentieth century. The decline in union membership in the private sector began in the early 1980swhen employers began to fight against the trade unions. As a result of these targeted efforts, the number of union members in the private sector has fallen dramatically, bringing it closer to the number of union members in the public sector. Membership in the public sector has remained constant over time. In some states There are more public sector unions in some countries and regions than in others. First and foremost is New York State, where around 7 in 10 public sector employees are unionised. Public sector unions are weakest in the South, where industrialisation never took off with the same ferocity as in the North and Midwest. The Employment in the USA changed dramatically in the 20th century with the rise and fall of the labour unions. You can find more infographics at Statista
