When Apple unveiled iOS 12, the upcoming version of its mobile operating system, at its annual developer conference a fortnight ago, one of the most important new features was a set of tools called Screen Time. Screen Time, which was launched just a few weeks after the Announcement similar functions for Android devices through Google was launched, includes activity reports, app limits and new "do not disturb" and notification controls, and is designed to help users "better understand and control the time they spend on apps and websites, how often they pick up their iPhone during the day and how they receive notifications".
In the last few months Apple and other phone manufacturers and social media companies to do their part to combat the growing problem of smartphone and internet overuse. While both Apple and Google have signalled that they are willing to take responsibility for this problem, consumers feel that they need to change their potentially unhealthy habits themselves. According to a survey conducted by Morning Consult According to the survey, 74 per cent of adults in the US believe that consumers are responsible for solving the problem of smartphone addiction, while only 9 per cent believe that technology companies are to blame.
